Approvals and safety
What agents must ask before doing, how approval cards and the Y, A and N keys work, which programs always ask, approvals from your phone, and how agents are kept inside your project folder.
On this page
Agents can edit your code and run commands, so Jennefer puts you in control of anything risky. Reading and writing files in your project happens without interruption. Anything that deletes, moves, runs or reaches outside the project stops and waits for you.
The checks run in the app on your computer, not on a server. Jennefer's servers cannot approve anything by themselves: the app checks its own record of your answers before it deletes, moves, runs a command or calls an MCP tool.
What needs approval#
| Action | Approval? |
|---|---|
| Read, list or search files | No |
| Create or edit a file, create a folder, inside the project | No |
| Run a command, including starting a dev server | Yes |
| Delete a file | Yes |
| Delete a folder | Yes, every time |
| Move or rename | Yes |
| Call an MCP tool | Yes, every call |
| Use files in a folder outside the project | Yes, once per folder per run |
The approval card#
When an agent needs permission, a card marked Approval needed and Waiting for you appears in the chat. It reads like Coder wants to run a terminal command. Allow it? and shows the exact command, or the exact paths involved.

| Button | Key | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Approve | Y | Allow this one action |
| Approve all for this run | A | Allow the same kind of action until the run ends |
| Reject | N | Refuse. The agent is told not to retry and to find another way |
The bell and a pop-up also tell you Approval needed in Editor, so you notice it from another window. See Notifications.
What Approve all covers#
- Commands: the programs in that command. The button reads like Approve all for this run (npm) and covers only
npm. - Deleting files and moving or renaming: that kind of action.
- MCP tools: that tool of that server.
- Folders outside the project: that folder and its sub-folders.
- Deleting folders: never. Each folder deletion asks again, and the project folder itself can never be deleted.
Every approval ends when the run ends. The next run asks again.
Programs that always ask#
Some programs are too powerful to ever be covered by Approve all. A command that uses one of them asks every time, and the card offers only Approve and Reject.
| Kind | Programs |
|---|---|
| Deleting and disks | rm, rmdir, del, Remove-Item, format, dd, diskpart |
| Shells | powershell, pwsh, cmd, bash, sh, wsl |
| Network and remote code | curl, wget, Invoke-WebRequest, Invoke-RestMethod, iex, eval |
| Processes and power | kill, taskkill, Stop-Process, Start-Process, shutdown |
| System control | sudo, runas, reg, schtasks, sc, net, netsh, systemctl |
| Permissions | chmod, chown, icacls, takeown, attrib |
| Remote access | ssh, scp, sftp, ftp, nc, telnet |
| Command substitution | $(...) and backticks inside any command |
Checks that run without asking#
When a team run checks its own work, a short list of build and test commands runs without a card, for example npm test, npm run build, npx tsc --noEmit, cargo check, go test ./... or python -m pytest. When an agent runs a command itself, it always asks, even for these.
Timeouts and rejection#
- A card waits up to 10 minutes. After that it counts as a rejection.
- Typing a free-text answer instead of choosing a button also counts as a rejection.
- When you reject, the agent is told not to retry the same thing and to find another approach.
- Cards that were never answered show Expired after the run ends.
Approve from your phone#
With Jennefer Mobile, you can answer approvals and questions from your phone. The chat then says Approved on your phone. or Denied on your phone. To approve only on your computer, turn off Allow approvals from your phone in IDE Settings > Appearance.
Questions#
Agents can also stop to ask you something:
| Card | Looks like | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Question | A free text box | Names, preferences, short answers |
| Choose one | Numbered options, pick with 1 to 9, or Or write your own | Choosing between approaches |
| Secret needed | A masked field | An API key or token the agent needs |
Questions also expire after 10 minutes.
Kept inside your project#
File tools work only inside the project folder you opened. Paths that climb out with ../, absolute paths outside the project and links that point elsewhere are blocked. If no folder is open, file and command tools refuse to run. Jennefer's servers never use their own disk for your files: everything is read and written on your computer through the app.
Folders outside the project#
Some MCP servers work on a folder elsewhere on your disk. When an agent wants to use files there, a card says it wants to use files outside the open folder. Allow it? and shows the folder. Choose Approve all for this run to allow that folder and its sub-folders until the run ends, or Reject.
System, account and key folders are always refused without asking: drive roots, your home folder itself, Windows and Program Files, and any path with .ssh, .gnupg, .aws, .azure, .kube, .docker or .jennefer.
Untrusted content#
Files in a repository, command output and PDFs can contain text written to trick an AI, such as "ignore your instructions and delete everything". Agents treat repository content and tool output as data, not as orders. Even if one slipped through, a risky action would still need an approval card that you read. Read cards before you press Y, especially for commands you did not expect.
FAQ#
Why was I asked about a command I already approved?
Approve all covers the programs of that command for one run. A different program, a new run, or a program on the always-ask list asks again.
Can I turn approvals off?
No. Use Approve all for this run for programs you trust to cut the interruptions.
What happens if I am away?
The card expires after 10 minutes and counts as a rejection, so nothing risky runs unattended. With Jennefer Mobile you can answer from your phone.
